FLOWERS FOR DEPARTING GUESTS

AUCKLAND, Apni 1/. Garlands of.flowers wero placed by the Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, upou the shoulders of distinguished women travellers duriug a ceremony 011 board the liner Rimutaka just before the ship sailed for London. Farewell niusic in honour of all the passengers was given from the ship's side by the Auckland Watersiders' Junior Band and a group of costumed Maori nitn and women presented songs and hakas. The public farewell was the first of its kind arranged by the' Auckland public relations office and the Mayor acted in liis capacity as president. Similar functions of welcome and farewell are planned for the arrival and departure of liners carrying iniportant travellers in future. The recipiehts of garlands were Lady Bledisloe, Lady Tovey and Lady McKenzie, wife of >Sir Clutha McKenzie. Bir Harry Batterbee, fonnerly British High Commissioner in New'Zoaland, accepted one on belialf of Lady Batterbee, who was indisppsed. The -ceremony took place 011 the boat deck in tlie presence of the ship's commander.
