o — ■ — — APRIL MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Otaki Borough Council was held on Wednesday night, the Mayor, Mr. C. F. Atmore, presiding. There were also present Crs. Young, Gimblett, Hakaraia, Bartosh, Bennett and Cook. Cr. Cook reported on the meeting held at Palmerston North recently, when the ten -year plan of work was outlined by the Minister of Works, Mr. Semple. He stated that the meeting was well attended and very instructive, and that as a result good work should be accomplished. He thought __ it advisable, however, to watch progress so that Otaki and district would get advantages. The business of the meeting had been well reported throughout by the Press,

The duplication of the railvay from Paekakariki to Palmerson North would be of great • mportance, while river protection vork and the proposed road from Shann'on to Wairarapa would be jeneficial to the district. Guinan, reported that there had been two cases of scarlet fever in fhe district during themonth, and , that all building jobs in the borough had been inspected. The Manawatu Catchment Board wrote stating that it had decided to seek an Order-in-Council vesting the control of water courses in the board's district in the Catchment Board. — Received. Advice was received that members of the' Main Highways Board would be on tour on April 22 and would arrive in Otaki at 10.45 a.m. and depart at 11 a.m. The Highways Council meeting would be held on May 7, and it was desired thkt , the council forward the annual higYiways estimates as early as possible after April 30. The Mayor expressed the hope that as. many councillors as possible would attend the meeting, while the town clerk, Mr. Alex. Wilson, said that hehad submitted various matters that it was desired should be discussed. A letter from Mr. N. N. Barron pointed out that when the borough workmen had tarred the footpati: In Matene Street,' they had lefc his fence in a filthy condition, absoiutely spoiling the look of his place. He asked the council to make good the damage done. — Agreed that the fence be cleaned and repainted. i The Chief Postmaster wrote j stating that an rnspection of the Otaki Post Office revealed the fact 'that the present postmaster had Imade a very good job of improving I he post office grounds, but the j whole effect was spoiled by the ! overgrown state of the road at the side of the office. It would be appreciated if the path was cleaned of weeds. — It was reported that this had been attended to. i Constable Qalwell wrote drawing attention to the very unsatisfac- ; tory state of the Otaki morgue. A , doctor had commented on the jutter lack of facilities and assert- ! ed that he would not undertake i another postmortem under the jexisting conditions. The town clerk | stated that a tender had been I received and accepted as far back l as. -1945, but that the ivork had ! never been carried out. He now I had reason to believe that the j work had been done. | The matter of Anzac Day serj vices was discussed and it was I decided to leave it in the hands of ihe R.S.A. Accounts amounting to £92 7s lOd were passed for payment.
