PRESENTATION TO RETIRING SECRETARY The • usual monthly irieeting of the Poroutawhao Women's Iiisticute was held- receiltly-, Mrs. Carle pfesiding. Mesdames Ha'nham and Scott were appointed as delegates to the council meeting at Mankau. Parcels wer'e sent to three boys of the " district who are serving in Japan. 'A very interestmg talk hy Mrs. Speirs on her trip through the tobacco and hop fields of Nelson, and her travels in the South Island, was a feature oi the after- • hoon's pTogramme. Mrs. Hanham, in presenting Miss Betty Carle' with a beautiful gilver powder bowl in recognition of her services as secretary, expressed regret that Miss Carle had been u'nable to earry on in that capacity. Miss Carle had been a most effieient and popular secretary, said Mrs. Hanham, and the institute was sorry to lose her services. The competitions resulted as follows: — Senior, best plate of scones: Mrs. Penny 1, Miss Carle 2, Mrs. Speirs 3. Junior, best dressed clothes peg: Miss Beryl Carle 1. Best bloom: Mrs. Hanham 1. . Best shrub: Mrs. Hanham. Best vegetable: Miss R. Old. The afternoon competitio'n' was won by Mrs. Penny and Miss R. Old (equal) . The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Tabor and Rowe.
