AUCKLAND, April 1(3. Allegation that there were eorrupt racehorse owners 1x1 New Zealand who tried to dope horses, was made by James Colin Gleeson to the Gaming Commissiou today. He cited the names of meiubers of illustrious fainiiies and also menibers of the Iioyal family who, he claimed, bet with bookmakers. He reeommended the iicensing of oft'-conrse bookmakers. Mr. Gleeson said the people he was referring to knew the calibre of the men with whom they were betting. He suggested there were persons of equal lidelity and integrity who could be lieensed as bookmakers here. * Mentioning racing clubs of whieh he was a life member, Mr. Gleeson said he had won £23,000 in st'akes. He contended that it was "not British ' ' to eompel the pubiic to keep on breaking the law. Cross-examined by Mr. Leicester for the Duminion Sportsmen's Association Mr. Gleeson said he lj.ad never known eorrupt praetices by bookmakers but knew there were eorrupt owners who tried to dope tlieir horses. Ninety per eeut of owners and eommitteemen of the clubs bet with v bookmakers, he added. Arthur Edward • Court, Christiaii science praetioner, said he consitjered gambling could be abolished by cduca ting children against it just as duelling had been abolished.
