INTEREST IN AGRICULTURAL TRIALS The monthly meeting of the Levin Young Farmers' Club was held in tne Oddfeilows' Sall recently, and was presided ovei1 by Mr. M. Rolston. ' v The question of radio -talks was raised as the Levin Club was required to write a talk which is to be broadcast on May 16. The talk could take the form of some-' thing of generai interest, or on some farming topic. These talks, which are broadcast frottx 2ZA, Palmerston North every Friday evening at 8.30 p.m., haVe deli'Aitely proved very educational and of great interest to young iarmers and the generai public. Mueh to the disappointment of club members, the proposed trip to Kapiti Island had to be cancelled until summer owing to unforeseen circumstances. • / • The chairman "then called upon Mr. J. M. Hopkins, of the Levin branch of the Deparoihent of Agriculture, to address the club on pasture experimental trials. Mr. Hopkins, after explaining the top-dressing trials, called for Volunteers on whose farms these Y.F.C. trials could be Conducted. It was decided to conduct three trials on properties ut Ohau West Road, Gladstone Road and Foxton Road, in which three different types of manures are to be used to find out which prodUces the best sward of grass of the most palatability. Mr. Hopkins then went on, to give a summary of the potato trials conducted on Mr. M. Rolston's propefty, Lindsay Road, Numerous varieties were grown and from a yield point Of VieW the following varieties proved successful: Doon Early and'Chippewa as early types; Arran Banner and Epicure as middle season types ; Up-to-Date, Sebago, Maj estic, Jersey Bennes and King Edwafd as main crop types. In conclusion, Mr. R. Speedy thanked the speaker for his most interesti'ng address. Films will be exhibited at the next meeting, which will be held on May 1, and it is hoped that the American technicolour film e'ntitled -"Milk Production" will be available.
