CITY MISSION VISITED BY THIEVES

AUCKLAND,- April 7. Thieves made two visits to .the ohicc of the Auckland Gity Mission in the Sunday SelTool'Umoii building, Queen ' Street, during Easter and on the second visit they forced open th'e safe aiw stole about £30. On Saturday morning, the, City Missioner, Rev. C. D. Casweli, found that several rooms in the missfon's premise.had been ransacked. Drawers and cup boards had beeu 'broken open aud aboiit £2 had been stolen from a s'teei eabinet. A safe ' which stood in Rev Casweli 's oliice had been moved to 'tln centre of the room where an unsuccess ful atteiiipt had been made to break ii open. The thieves- had entered the building through a faniight. When another member of the mission st-aff went to the premises on Sunda% morning he found the building had been entered through the same fan Hght. The safe "had been dragged from I the cffice to the kitchen, turned on its end and haeked away at the bottom until it was opened. Hacksaws, chiseU and a srnall crowbar found on tht j premises were used on the safe. Th i estimated sum of £30 stolen eou sisted of talcings from a jumble sale oii Thursday and other money which could not be Banked before the hoiidays Before leaving the thieves scrawled on the wall in peneil: " Kilroy was here. Iii Hoha. " Thieves made an unsuceessful at tempt to blow open the strongroom doo in the butchery shop of R. and W 'Hellaby, Ltd., Queen Street,- oppositr the Chief Post Office, during the week end. The discovery was made when a member of the staff arrived at th« I shop this morning. He found that the shop assistants' coats .had been heaped over the front of the strongroom doo ahd that an explosive. charge had been lired in the loek, the coats being used to imvffle the explosion. The charge however, had had little eff'ect on the door. Nothing was taken from the shop.
