E/j Norris, Manawatu captain, went out on to the field followmg the { fourth leg before wicket decision j against Manawatu 's early batsmen, and after a bricf consultation with Reaney, the Bay captain, turned to the sole batsman at | the crease and ordered hihi back to the pavilion. The incident followed the dismissal of J. Ongley, the fourth l.b.w. vietim, at which stage Manawatu. had only 17 runs on the board. In the first innings Manawatu lost five wickets to l.b.w. dceisions. After a lapse of several minutes during which the Bay players remained on the field, Reaney wenf to the pavilion and apparently discussed the matter behind closed doors with the Manawatu team. He reappeared a few minutes later and signalled his team off Ihe field. Reaney stated when questioned tliat Norris had asked for oue of the umpires to be replaced, otherwise be wonld not continue. Reaney had roplied that the umpires were appointed by the llawkes Bay Association and he was unable to accede to the re quest.

The Manawata team, after leaving the field, changed from ci'ickeiing clothes immediately and left the field, thus forfeiting Ihe game and the cup to llawkes Bay, who, at this stage, were 44 runs behind on the first innings. Norris* stated in .an interview later, that the decision was a unanimous one by his team which considered it futile to continue the game in the circumstanees. MANAWATU.
