fortnightly meeting of .. council ' The usual f.ortnightly meeting of the Shannon Boroiigh Qouncil was held " on Tuesday, evening. -The Mayor (Mr. R. E. Downes) presiaed dnd those present .Were Crs. R. R. Lind, J. A. Roach, H. Aitchison, W. C. "Higgie, E. Perr'y and C. ,G. Wishart.. An apology for absence was received from Cr. H. L. Norris. s ' : On the motion of Cr. Roach, a grant of £25 was made to the Shannon Volunteer Fire Brigade. " ' Advice was received from the Main Highways .Boafd that it would be in Shannon on April 22, and would be pleased to hear any matters of importance which the council desired to place before it. A communication to the effect that the Minister of Works would be at Palmerston North on. April 2 was received. It stated that the Minister would outlin.e N a ten-year plan of works for the Manawatu and Wairarapa. It was decided that the chairman of the works committee (Cr. Lind) would represent the council.
In reply to 'the council's enquiry as to whether it could supply sanitary cans, the War Assets Realisation Board advised that it could not assist the council in this direcdon. The town clerk reported that he had also been in communic'a-, tion with a Palmerston North firm, and had received a reply, stating that they were expecting a supply shortly. The town clerk of Eastbourne wrote asking for particulars of the Shannon Fire Brigade. It was decided that the matter be left in ihe hands of the town clerk to reply, giving • a full outline of the brigade and its activities. Permission was granted to Mr. C. J. Box, of Wellington, to opefate a nsh delivery in Shannon, subject co the conditions being carried out to the satisfaction of the health, officer. Permission was also granted a Vance Street resident to move a shed from his property in that street to a section on the intersection of Plimmer Terrace and Vance Street. , Authority was , given Shannon Motors to install . an electric petrol pump in place of the manual pump now in operationv • On the motion ;Qf Cr. Higgie, it was decided to grant the Horowhenua Rugby Uriion the use of the domain for theemsuing football season - on the same terms as last year. The union, ris to. be notified that the ground. will not be available on Saturday, April 19. A request from the local football club to have the grass mown at the east end of the domain- Was granted. . - . . • It was decided" to cali>. tenders for the supply of metal to be delivered on the borough streets. On'the motion of Cr. Wishart, it was resolved that the tenants of borough sections be given the right of renewal for a further year on. the same conditions as the last 12 months. . The Mayor and Crs. Lind and Aitchison reported on their meeting with the doctor and their discussion with him of the provision of a residence. Further investigation is to be made by the council regarding the housing problem. Accounts amounting to £112 8s lOd were passed for payment.
