Men Determined All Demands Must Be Met
By Telegraph-
AUCKLAND, April 2. Auckland's naval "strike" con-cin-ued this morning. With o-nly oTne of three major demands satisiied, the 200 ratings at, the naval oase of Devonport, wpo walked out late yesterday afternoon, showed their determfnation this morning to remain out until their three demands were met. The first demand, concerning retrospective pay, . was met last night by. a supplementary statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, but the other points on which the men are seeking satisfaction are that no discliplinary action is to be taken against them and that a welfare comrnittee of mainly the lower deck hands be set up. The propospl is that this comrnittee be the channel through which the men can discuss and make representations regarding their pay and conditions. After hoiamg a meeting in Devonport Park this morning, the men walked in an orderly fashion to the gates of the Devonport Naval ' Base, where they 'were addressed by^ Commander P. Phipps, D.S.C., RJN.Z.N., the cominanding officer of H.M.N.Z.S. Philomel. Dr. Finlay, M.P., also tddressed them. The men returned to the park to await develop-' ments.
