TEMPORARY SETTLEMENTS

While the provision of permanent housing in Xew South Waies is still tagging due to material and Jabo'ur shortages and industrial troubles, temporary settlements are swelling enoruiously. The Herne Bay housing settleinent established a year ago when th'e Housing Commission provided accommodation for four homeless families at the former United States hospitai, now coin prises 900 families aird has a total .popu lation of 4000. -It is a self-containe'd suburb with its own provision stores, inilk bars, clothing stores, barbei-s, beauty parlours, elremists and doctofs. A primary school opened two months ago now has an attehdance of 300 chil dren. Xin-ety others attend nursety. The residents have cooperated to form n gyimnasium, youth club, sports and 'cricket clubs, Welfare -associat-ion abd Chamber of Commerce.
