w,. ... — — BIG DROP IN LEVEL The long spell oij .dry weather has Jiad the effect of , reducing ' the level of the Manawatu River to an extent not previously equalled in the records. .. ; At the monthly meeting of the Manawatu Catchment Board, held in Palmerston North on Tuesday afternoon, the engineer, Mr. P.'G. Evans, ■ stated th^t ' an aerial survey had. been made , of the river from the Shannon bridge to the mouth, because, with the water at such a low level, valuable data could he obtained. In addit'ion to the dry period, the drop was the result of the accelerated flow through the Whirokino Cut. The survey had been made by, Mr. H. R. Farquhar. Mr. R. R. Lind said that the low level of the river had yielded important information regarding the for.mation of the river bed. Sand banks had been revealed at many bends, while an island of sand had appeared as far up the river as the Shannon Bridge. The engineer's action in having the survey made was approved by the boarck
