CRICKET MATCH ON UNUSUAL GROUND

A cricket match of an unusual nature was played at Moutoa on a recent afternoon. With the ManaWatu River at its present low level there is a stretch of dry land in the centre of the river during low tide, Qn this some Maori boys of Poutu Pah decided to hold a cricket match. There was just enough dry land to form a pitch and allow for a few close in fleldsmen. Whenever the batsmen connected with the ball, the fleldsmen dived into the water to recover it. Strange as it may seem, the position of fleldsmen seemed to be the most popular, many batsmen declaring their innings closed with only one or two runs to their credit in order that they could take a place in the "outfield." _____
