DRAINAGE SCHEME FOR LEVIN
ENGINEER PRESENTS INTERIM REPORT An interim report on the proposed drainage scheme was presented to Monday night's meeting of the Levin Borough Council by the engineer, Mr. K. W. Sandfprd, who said that acting on instructions from the council he had carried out a survey of the closely settled portions of the hprough, and those areas where septie tanks were diffieult to operate. The council's instructions had been for approximately 400 acres, but to adequately serve the borough, in his opinion at least some 480 acres would need to be reticulated. He also pointed out that the prevailirig tendency for wage increases would mean an increase in the estimates for the reticulation, particularly in yiew of the suggested possibility of a general wage increase of £1 in the wages of all unionists. He estimated that the reticulation of 480 acres would involvp an expenditure of £65,745. - Mr. Sandfprd proposcd that the sludge from the septic tanks be used together with the abattoir waste products as composting material, in which case there might be some recovery of expenditure to balance against the cost of treatment. • "The possibility of the proposed sanatorium connecting to the drainage system has been taken into aecount in the extending of the length of nine ineh- drain to Weraroa Road, and this has entailed an alteration of 13.chains of six inch to the .same length of nine ineh drain, involving only £150 variation in the total estimates," the report continued. The area covered by the proposal would involve approximately 160 proper-r ties at present served by night soil collection, so that there would remain only about 80 on the service after installation of the sewerage scheme. The sanitation * service would then only warrant part time attention.- % Followi'ng discussion on the engineer's report it was agreed that it should be passed over -to the works eommittee for eonsideration and further discussion. It was quite evident, said the Mayor, Mr. H; B. Burdekin, that cer'tain other areas not included in tfie engineer's' plan would require to be included. The mattcr. however, was too large tp be fully discussed that eyening, and he 'suggested a special meeting sliould be lield later. Jt might yet be necessary to consider a, largef scheme.
