Hopes of an early settlement of the Sydney waterside dispute faded this afternoon wheh the Stevedofing Industry Coinniission decided not to rescind its order coucerning the working of overtiine. The Sydney branch ur the Waterside Workers ' f'ederation which has its own scheme for settling the strike without overtiine, is considering the Coinniission ;s latest decision before putting proposals for ward. Sugar rehning at the Pyrmont (Sydney) works of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company Will cease this evening. N early 80U work'ers hdve been warned that their services will not be required. Already 150 casual workers have been out of employment for a week because 14,000 tons of raw sugar have not been unloaded from the holds .of the vessels in port. Unemploynient is expected to spread to the fruit canning and jain inanufacturing industries and to other concerns producing ice creani, condenSed milk, eordials, syrups, jelJies, eonfectionery, cake, biscuits aiul beer. The shortage of salt is also having its effect on factories processing meat and cur- i ing hains and baron. The position will not becoihe desperate until the weekend j when large scale disinissals mav be j necessary.
