NAVAL LIEUTENANT FORGOT HIS RANK
Received Monday, 8.30 p.m. SYDNEY, Mar. 17. A naval courtmartial held today alioard H.M.A.S. Hobart, severely reIjrimanded Licutenant William Behrens Simms for remarks to ratings during a disturbance when H.M.A.S. Deloraine was at Townsville last month. One witness said that Simms, when surrounded by six men making threatening gestures, said: "There is not a man aniongst you who has the guts to strike uie." He was charged with engaging in an altercation with three ratings and with using provokiug speeeh. Both charges were found proved. In a statement it was alleged that three ratings were arrested for drunltenness after abusing the officer of the watch. Later about 60 other men eamc on deek and some made abusive remarks to Simms. The lower deck was ordered to be cleared. After .using the words referred to above, Simms was ordered below by the captain who then dispersed the men.
