BROKEN TANKER'S FIGHT

Received Tuesday, 11 a.m. HONOLULU, March 17. Latest reports reveal that the stern section of the broken lanker Fort Dearborn is steaming stern | to the wind in an endeavour to. reach Honolulu with 22 members of the crew aboard. The exposed forward bulkhead is still intact de-' spite the battering it has received from the high seas, which are now abating. Rescue attempts have been postponed by the Navy amphibious command ship Eldorado which radioed that it was having increasing difficulty in staying with the weakened stern. A Navy patrol vessel sent to sink the unmanned bow by gunfire, reports that it is abandoning the search because of the seas. The fate of the twelve members of the crew who abandoned the Fort Dearborn in an open lifebaat when the tanker broke in two, is still unknown. The navy said a lifeboat, if still afloat, would probably have drifted out of the range of land based aircraft, conseauently shipping in the area has been diverted to broaden the search.
