Building Activity There is no sign of slackening in the demand for building permits. During February three permits for new dwellings valued in all at £5302 were issued by the Levin Borough Council. This brings the total since April 1 last to 65, with an aggregate value of £100,995. In addition 47 permits have been granted for alterations and additions, the value of these being £6619. Abattoir Fees The fees at'the Levin Abattoir for the monthj of February were £1003 8s 2d, f"as compared with £938 15s '6d foiDthe corresponding month in 1946. „ This was reported to last evening*'s meeting of the Levin Borough Council by the manager (Mr. F. E. Larsen) . Landmark Removed ' 1 Historic Pandora Point, southern landmark of Napier's hill district, was disintegrated by a one-tone charge of gelignite fired shortly after 9 o'clock on Saturday moraing. About 20,000 yards of spoil, includirig boulders up to two tons in weight, were hurled across the roadway below and the Port Ahuriri railway line was temporarily blocked. Windows of nearby nouses were treated to minimise effects of blast and the authorlties of Napier Public Hospital were warned of'the approximate time )f the explosion. J-Force Recruiting At the end of the last week of the special campaign for recruits for the J-Force relief draft the total enlistments were 3213. Figures, which are those received up to 9 a.m. yesterday, show 1237 enlistments from the Northern Military .District, 1271 from the Central District and 705 from the Southern District. No figures are yet available regarding the W.A.A.C. detachment which is to number 40, although indications are that the quota will be easily filled. The next draft of the J-Force will enter camp on March 19.
