Grenade Thrown At President of Philippines MAN ESCAPES 1N CROWD

Received Tuesday, 10.55 a.m. MANILA, March 10. An unidcntified man attempted to assassinate the Philippines President, Senor Manuel Roxas, today. The man threw a hand grenade on a platform at the Plaza Miranda, where Senor Roxas had just finished speaking. Senor Roxas was uninjured, although the grenade exploded just twenty fcet' from him. The only casualty was a Press photographer, who was injured. Senor Roxas had boen speaking in favour of parity for American and Pilipino business enterprise in the Philippines, on whicn a J 1 plebiscite is to be held tomorrow. Brigadier-General Carlos Romulo, the Philippines delegate to United Nations, was congratulating Senor Roxas when the grenade was hurled from the midst cf a crowd of 50,000. The President of the Senate, Senor Jose Avelino, kicked the grenade away. It rolled about ten feet and struck the photographer in the back. The crowd immediately scampered and disappeared like magic, despite police efforts to cordon off the area.
