TEN MILE EVENT TO TREDREA
By Telegrapn-
Auckland, March 9. . E. T. Tredrea and E. L. G. Hughes, of Auckland, and. the junior, L. P. Loeke, of Canterbury, were easily the outstanding performers in fields of flne quality when the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Championships were held on Saturday at Western Springs Stadium before about 3000 spectators. Each of the three performed magni/ieently. Tredrea won the gruelling 10 iniles senior paced ehampionship by more than three laps in setting a New Zealand record for the event. Hughes, by ridiug second to Tredrea in the raee, broke a string of live successive victories in national ehampionship cycling events iu the last two montlis, and Locke, by win ning the junior half mile unpaced and junior live miles jiaeed championships, aniply demonstrated he is the greatest prospect New Zealand amateur cyeling has seen in many years. D. Yeates, of Palmerston North, who rode for the West Coas't North Island centre, caused an upset by defeating the titleholder, A. W. Htonex, in the 500 metres unpaced ehampionship in unusual circumstances. To decide the titleholder three mateh races between the two were proposed. In the first of them Stqnex was forced to withdraw just after the two had entered upon the last furlong, the only timed' portion oi the race, when Yeates cut across iii front and accidently tore about a dozen spokes from iSfonex's front wheel. Both men stopped ridiug and shook hands but a little later YcHt.es rode across the finishing Hue. Sto'nex entered a protest against Yeates' win 011 the ground that Yea'ts had eut across too sharply, Imt the protest was disallowed. In the second lieat, Btonex's tactics were faulty when he let Yeates get about a length in front approaching the furlong. As Htonex aceelerated Yeates also made a jump and in a verv fasr fmish the Aucklander was narrowlv beaten, In the following results abbreviations used are as follow: (WC) West Coast, (C) Canterbury, (W) Wellington, (A) Auckland.
