BRITAIN'S SERIOUS PLIGHT
EFFECTS OF SEVERE WINTER* Some indication of the serious plight of the people of Great Bricain as a result - of the- unusually severe winter they have experienced may be gained from the letter received by a Levin resident Irom relatives in the Homeland, in acknowledgment of a very welcome parcel forwarded. Writing from Sherborne, Dorset, cn February 16, the correspondent states: "You will have heard by the time this reaehes you of our fuel situation, and what a bad state we are in. It is very hard for the people who only have electricity for heat as it is cut off from 9 a.m. to noon and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. For the past five weeks we have ,1 continual frosts and snow, and we' will all be glad when the thaw sets in. We hope for better times to come, but this Government seems to, be making a mess of 2verything, "Dorset and Somerset have had foot and mouse discase very badly. the first outbreak occuring about ten days before Christmas. In Dorset alone between 2000 and 3000 head of cattle had to be slaughtered."
