COMMITTEE'S MARCH MEETING The March meeting of the Shannon School Committee was held on Monday evening. Those present were Messrs. A. E. Jelfrey (cnaicman, L. J. Bowler (secretairy) , E. T. Wilson, I. Peni, F, Bradey, F. J. Lucinsky, S. Free;. E. Barber and Mrs. C. Stern. The chairman extended a welcome to the new neadmaster, Mr. F. O. Burtt, and expressed his thanks to the committee and teachers for their help with the children on the day of the picnic. Mr. Jeffrey reported that the picnic was most, successful in every way, and after the liabilities had been met there was still a credit balance. It was decided to expend this for the benefit of the children on school sports material. Mr. M. H. Oram, M.P., had previously been asked to use his influence to assist the committee in getting the Kingston Road bus service extended &s far as Rangatane Road. His reply stated that he had discussed the matter when he was in Wellington, but the department was of the view that it could not extend the service any further as it would be too close to the Makerua School. The committee decided not to let this matter rest, so a deputation of committee niembers and interested parents will go to Wellington as soon as it can be arranged. The headmaster expressed his thanks to the committee for the invitation to be present at the meeting, which he appreciated, as it was a privilege and not a'right. He proposed to develop sport, was keenly. interested in music and art, and would like to give the children

a chance of bnnging forward suggestions for the bett.er running of the school by appointing a limited number of prefects and forming a school council. This would provide some training iir leadership and the carrying of responsibilities. The school roll now totalled 258. Mr. Wilson, as visiting committeemen, gave a report on the minor repairs needed in and around the school, and arrangements ! f or having these done were made. It was felt that'&" working bee of committeemen could best deal with urgent repairs required to the seats at the baths. Messrs. F. J. Lucinsky ahd A. E. Jeffrey were a^pointed visiting committeemen 'for March. It was reported that eleven of the school football; jerseys had not been hand.ed b.ack'af the end'bf .the season, ahd a S the .co'mniittee required them 'immediately, it was resolved that if they . were not forthcoming i. actiye: ,-stbps wobld be taken to recbver thehi.
