Pcrsonfll Mr. and Mrs. W. Hyde, of Horotuiu, are spending a holiday with Mrs. E. L. Hyde, "Lindore," Thompson Street. The many friends of Miss L. Beech, of Mangaore, will regret to learn that she has found it necessary to enter the Palmerston Nbrth Hospital for treatment. Her friends join in wishing her a speedy and complete recovery. Winners of 500 The Women's Section of the R.S.A. conducted another- of. their weekly 500 evenings in Laurvig's Hall on Monday evening. There was a good attendance of players and ihe prize-winners were Mrs. W. Third and Mrs. J. Kenny. The winners of the previous week's tournament were Mr. E. Thorne and Mrs. J. Sinclair. Sections for State Houses Speaking at the recent meeting of the Shannon Borough Council, the town clerk, Mr. J. T. Bovis, advised the council that the State Housing Department had purchased sections in Stout Street, and was negotiating for other sections for ohe erection ' of State houses in Shannon. The council expressed pleasure that the department was preparing a housing scheme . for the town. Old Identity Passes One of Shannon's early residents, Mr. Joseph . George Peers, died at Takapuna recently at the age of 77 years. The late gentleman developed a virgin country farm near the Manawatu River, at Buckley, and lived there alone for some 50 years. In November, 1944, the late Mr. Peers sold his Buckley property and lived for a time at Bombay, in the Auckland district, and later at Takapuna. Donation to Library The donation of a number of valuable books has been made to the Shannon Public Library by Mrs. Clayton, Senr. When advising the council of the donation at its meeting on Tuesday evening, the town clerk, Mr. J. T. Bovis, stated that the books were of a very high standard and were a valuable addition to the library. The town clerk was asked to write to Mrs. Clayton, extending the sincere thanks of the Mayor and councillors for her generous gift.
