SPORTS AT OTAKI
INTERESTING RACING SEEN Despite the threatening weather on Wednesday evening there was a good attendance at the sports on tlie domain. Again the Otaki A.A. and C. Club is to be commended on its management. For the flrst pare of the evening children's races were aeld, and they were followed by the senion events, which provided interesting racing. Results are as follows: — 1 Half-mile cycle.-— Mathie (35 yds) 1, Blomfield (Scr.) 2, Hurley (65 ds) 3. The finish was a close oue, inches only separating the riders. Time, 1 min. 20 secs. Half-mile junior cycle.— Smith I (Scr.) 1, Wilton (25 yds) 2, Brooks (70 yds) 3. Other starters were Walsh and Fox (90 yds), and Waitere (100 yds). The race was won m good style by a length. Time, 1 min. 21 secs. Junior 100 vards. — Mudge 1, Iousiaux 2, Gordon 3. Nine starters. Won by inches. Time, 11 s6cs. Boys' 440 yards. — J. Nicholls 1, T. Johnson 2. R. Seal 3. This race was won by Cootes to whom the prize money was paid, but ic was an-ex-wards found that the lad had joined in the race about 100 yards from the winning post. He was disqualificd and the money handed over to the winner. Stroppers' race, 100 yards. — G. Guthrie 1, Hakaraia 2. Speed trial, cycle, one lap.— . Blomfield 1, Mathie 2, Hurley 3. bnly starters. Won by a wheel.. Time, 40 sec. The previous rccord was 3 9 2" sec.. Junior speed trial, cycle. — Smith 1, Wilton 2, Brooks 3. Won comfortably. Time, 39 1-5, even better han those taking part in the senior race. Men's 220 yards handicap. — First heat: Mudge 1, Julius 2. Farrow 3; timo, 23 4-5 secs. -Second heat: N. Gordon 1, Stcvens 2, W. Cook 3; time, 24 £ secs. Final: Gordon 1, Mudge 2, Julius 3; a good finish; time, 24-2 secs. Slow cycle race. — D. Fox 1. Cycl.ists' 100 yards handicap.— Hurley 1, Blomfield 2, Collis 3. Tim6, 11 1-5 secs. Relay. — Ota'ki quartette 1, Jockeys 2. The president, Mr. Fred Edwards announced that next Wednesday would be the final of the series, when it was expected that there would be a number of competitors "rom the Lcyiri, Training Centre. as well as frdrri other parts of the district. Mr.. Edwards regretted that two star trapeze performers couJd not give an exhibition of their skill, On account of the apparatus - not coming to hand. He hoped, however, that the young ladies, wh.e were Visitors from the south, would oe able to appear at a future date. Cyclists received a warning that if caught at night riding without lights, they would be prosecutcd.
