GENERAL MEETING HELD The Shannon branch of the Returned Services' Association held its usual general meeting in Laurvig's Hall on Saturday. evening. Mr. J. Ritchie (vice-president) occupied the chair and those present were Messrs. E. J. Gunning (secretary) , J. H. Sinclair, 'W. Third, R. L. Quinlan, E. Allen, J. A. Read; J. Stevens, J. M. Kenny, J. Griffiths, R. O'Donnell, E. Veale, R. Higgott. T. S. Downes, I. Falkner, C. Guerin, E. Morris, R. Hook, N. Retter and A. Third. Apoiogies were received from Messrs. S. W. Barber and V. J. Bateman. The secretary reported that the roll now stood at 233 members, being made up of 188 from Shannon and 45 from Tokomaru. Financial membership was 218, of which 143 were second war members. A circular letter was received from N.Z.R.S.A. in connection with the nominating of officers for the positions of Dominion president and vice-president. A letter was also received from Mr. B. J. Jacobs, advising that he would not be offering himself for re-election as Dominion president and thanking the local branch for its confidence in him during his term of office. A further circular from Head office advised that remits for the annual conference would have to be in the secretary's hands by March 14 and all members who had remits should hand them to Mr. Gunning as soon as possible so that they may be sent to the head office. On the motion of Mr. T. S. Downes a remit submitted by Mr. J. Sinclair was passed for dispatch to the N.Z.R.S.A. conference. After being held over from the previous meeting, discussion was resumed on the proposal of sending food parcels to Britain. The 'secretary read a letter from Mr. O. T. Provost, Fife, Scotland. enclosing a list of needy returned servicemen in that area. Following a discussion in which some members expressed doubt as to the possibility of collecting sufficient funds to carry out the proposition successfully, Mr. R. Hook moved that the matter be held up until such time s funds were available. It was stated that 916 poppies, were available for distribution in the distrct for the annual poppyl day. ! The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair. Following the business of the evening, members were entertained by the Women 's Section at supper. WOMEN'S SECTION MEETS Owin'g to the Shannon Sports Club's annual flxture taking place on the date set down for the March meeting of the Women's Section of the R.S.A., the organisation . held its' meeting in Laurvig's Hall on Sn.tnrdav evenine-. Mrs. C. Guerin
presided and Mesdames Quinlan, Sinclair, Griffiths, Kenny, Veale, Morris, Retter, Ritchie and Miss D. Ritchie were present. The roll call competition caused much amusement. When it was suggested that the section hold an .arts and crafts exhibition, it met with an enthusiastic response from members and following a discussion it was decided to hold the exhibition in June, complete arrangements to be made at a later date. There was a good entry of flowrs in the bloom competition and the results were Mesdames Quinlan and Griffiths (equal) first and Mrs. Kenny second. Hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Griffiths, Sinclair and Guerin.
