WELLINGTON, Thursday. Last season was highly successful financially for New Zealand rugby. Figures given bv Mr. S. S. Dean, chairman, to a meeting of the N.Z.R.F.U. Council today showed that the Australian tour resulted in a profit of £4128, subject to deductions resulting from charges still to be met. In almost every centre the gross gate takings for matches played by the Australians ran into three figures. The first test at Dunedin reached £3643, and the second at Auckland £3220. The gross gate at Wellington was £2615. The Kiwi tour returned a profit to the New Zealand Union of £5869, which had since been divided equally among constituent unions and the Heritage movement, said Mr. Dean. The gross gates were: Auckland £3201, Masterton £890, Christchurch £2041, Dunedin £2487, and Wellington £3312. The interIsland match at Wellington, which was affected by the weather, drew a gate of £1552, and the Maori match for the Prince of Wales Cup, at Whangarei, resulted in a loss of about £200. Mr. Dean eommented upon the substantial sums paid in amusement tax for the Australian visit. Tax waS about £2000, and for the Kiwi matches £1800.
