WANGANUI, Feb. 23. Tlie New Zealand Byass Bauds championsliip contest opened liere today at Cook's Gardens in line autumn weather. Today 's event was the hymn test (own selection) and tlie judge, 'Mr. Hugli Niven, of Melbourne, aAvarded lirst place to Hawera Mirnicipal with 48 points. Auckland Watersiders Eilver and at. lvilda Municipal Bands witli 46 poiuts tied for second pljice. Palmerston North City Eilver was fourth with 45 points, Then came (^ueen Alexandra 's (Wanganui), Wanganui Garrison, Nelson Garrison and Woolston Bras? each with 44 points, Wellington Boys' institute, Wellington Watersiders Hilver and Auckland City Boys 43, Blenheim Kegimental, Feilding Municipal 42, Crighton Cobbcrs (Toc H), Wollington Tramways 39, Christchurch Municipal, Invercargill Civic, Oamaru Gar: rison and atratford Citizens 38, Patea JMuuicipal and Rangiora Brass 37, L,,eilding Municipal ' Boys 36. Four bands wero disqualiiied — Westport Municipal, Taranaki Kegimental, Palmerston North Garrison and Auckland Boys' Institute. Amplifying his dccisions the judge said he was satislied wuth the standard of plapng. It augur^sd. 'Whil r.for the future. Hy^lLpkying feqdlreil a good deal of attcntion and some eonduetors tried to imitatC|an organ. The phrasos, however, must be dchned and offered great scopc to intelligent playing. Some tempos wero too slow even for li^-mns and a draggiug slow tempo detracted from the iilaying.
