AUCKLAND, Feb. 23. Featured by the first defeat suffered in scratch races since 1943, of R. A. Agate, national sprint champion, the Auckland provineial athletie ehampionships were also notable for the number of records brolcen. J. M. Holland chopped 4-5 spcs ofl the national 440 yards hurdles ' record in defeatiug the present national titleholder, A. C. Hill, by 20 yards in 54 1-5 secs. R. E. Penrose, with a time of 51 secs, the junior quarter niile by one-fifth second. A. E. Eustaee, national 120 yards hurdle champion, equalled P. F. Sharplcy's 10-year-old national record of 15 secs for the race. In the junior 100 yards R. E. Gibbons equalled the national record with a time of 10 1-5 secs. D. G. Stewart equalled the national junior record of 26 secs for the 220 yards low hurdles. Five provineial records were better ed, ' the most noteworthy performance being scored by J. P. Neesham with a broad jump of 22 feet 11 inches or 2 inches better than the provineial record and just four inches short of J. Keudell's 40-year-old national record. Agate was beaten in the 100 yards by D. A. Walker in a photo finish but made amends for the defeat by easily outclassing the field in the 220 yards.
