SHANNON WAS LUCKY

Although winds of hurricane force swept the west coast on Friday and Saturday, Shannon was lucky as damage was only done in exposed pOsitions. In the borough some trees and one or two fences suffered, but on the whole the town escaped any major damage. In the outlying districts telephone and power lines were damaged, but due to efficient maintenance gangs there were no extensive hold-ups in either power or telephone service. Fences and a few outbuildings suffered damage in the Moutoa and Opiki districts, and some trees weie uprooted in more exposed positions in these areas.
