Despite a storm of protest from animal lovers, archers from se\ren Statos held a butt'alo slioot at Rawlins, Wyoming, in an etlort to prove tlieir tlieory that an arrow from a 601b. bow vvould kill as surely as a bullet from a big game rifle. The tlieory, howeveiq was disproved for the buft'aloes liad to be Pmished olf witb bullets. They were corralled and then forced to run the gauntlet of eleven archers. The first beast, after a two-mile running fight with three arrows embedded iii its belly,'was shot dead. The next three were also killed by riflemen to prevent prolonged sufferings Those who sponsofed tlie event weie almost unanimous that similar sliootn were unlikely to be-held.
