Councirs Monthly Meeting The monthly meeting of the Oi/aki Borough Council was held on Wednesday night. The Mayor, Mr. C.. F. Aimore, presidcd and there were also present Crs. Young, Hakaraia, Bermett and Cook. Leave of absence was granted to Crs. Baroosh and Gimblett. New Water Main The , Pubnc Works Department wroce stating that its district engineer strongly advised against the laymg of flbrolite pipes' m the new water main along the maui Highway before the rormation of the road was completed. Bulldozers would be used in the road formation and the pipes would be almost sure to be broken. The road formauion work was not on next year's estimates and no levels would be available till the work was authorised. The engineer had suggested that a temporary pipe line might be laid inside the private road boundaries. The line would not have to be laid deep, but would have to be under the entrances of the various properties. The Mayor said he had been in communication witft the department, and the matter had been confirmed. While discussing the water main ■ihe shortage of water was consid- | ered, it being pointed out that in j places at the beach, there was only i a trickle. Cr. Hakaraia suggested j that the use of hoses, unless held j in the hand, be prohibited between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The council sdonted this sn^gestion. Forming Of Right-of-Way Mr. B. H. Rhodes, on behalf of 'he residents of Babbacombe Av3nue,-ask?d if the council would |mark and form the right-of-wny Ifrom the Avenue to Marine Parade. |For years there had been vacant 'sections and residents had had no Idifliculty of access. Now, however. all the sections had been sold, and the road to the beach blocked. A great deal of work would not be involved, it being a matter of de^ning the light-of-way and shiftjing a certain amount of sand.. I It was felt that the council could [do littlein the matter, but a willingness was exprecsed to assist as far as possible. v PrOposed Tennis Courts A letter from the Otaki Tennis [Club asked if it was the intention jof the council to lay down tennis [courts on the domain, and if the ; council' would- favourably- consider |renting the courts to the club and 'on what t-erms. It was decided to ascertain what fhe club actuallv needed and the l°mount it was propared to pay for |the use of courts. It was considered J'hat the matter was one that would" some under the memorial scheme, end it was pointed out that Mr. Mortiboy was arranging a ccncert dn connection with this, with a view [to raisinm funds. Finance Committee ! The finance committee's report j was submitted. General Matters ; It was stated that there was to be a parade of masscd bands at | O aki on Sunday, March 9, and the ! assistance of the council was j desircd. — It was agreed to help by j "ronlying timber and erecting a platform. It was pointed out .that the monev to be raised was for the j purpose of assisting Mrs. Tcwiata ard family while Mr. Tewiata was ! stitdying overseas. Cr. Hakaraia favoured an i imp-ovement to the camping ground, stating that the council had effered to do something in the mat- , ter. So far the council had done iittle.
