GloJBOKNE, Feb. 11. The neeessity for cleanliness in the storage and sale of foodstufi's was emphasised by the retiring president of the New Zealand Master Grocers' Federation (Mr. F. A. Fanselow, of Wellington) at the annual eonferenee of the federation, whieh opened today. "It is a matter of regret to me," said Mr. Fanselow, "that, after 25 years of federation aetivity, wb do not find trade on a higher planc. Many grocers are fltill eontent to cOnduct their businesses in a manner Whieh does noL retleet any credit on the proprietor .and casts a grave refleetion on tlie trade as a whole. I consider that the publie are entitled to service, civility, and last, tuit by no means least, cleanliness. The grocev's shop should be no less clean than the home to whieh the food frnds its way. Unfortunately, sueh is not the position in far too many instanees. " Dealing with a suggestion that the Government 's soeialisation poliey might "xtend to the retail groeery trade, Mr. Fanselow said an unequivocal assurance from the Government would help to ullay fears. The survival or otherwise of the individual grocer 'would depend Rulxstantially on the manner in whieh he mercliandised his foods. The present method. of holding busi ness beeause of butter registratious and the distribufcing of short lines must come to an end, and in anticipation of tliis happy event grocers should put their o\spi house in order. "Oontinuance of the' present state of apathy, " added-Mr. Fanselow, "can be .just as disastrous to the individual as another depression. " }
