Covent Garden portcrs, the men famous for balancing tovers .of baskets on their heads, are just as proud of a new market feat that also depends on co-ordination and control. Covent Garden Pitching Contractors. Having worked for contractors for 20 years at less than £5 a week, old-timer Alexander suggested to a group of eight colleagues that they work independently, shp.re out their combined week's takings. That was six years ago. Now Alexander's group had grown to 178 porters, who do all the Covent Garden work for 190 of the 198 firms in the market. Their weekly wage is well ab^ye £5, sick leave pay is £4 and a penusion scheme is under way. Organiser Alexander and his foreman get the sanm pay as the porters whose earnings are pooled.
