The average Australian taxpayer .paid nearly 11 times more tax iu 1945-46 thttii he did iu 1915 14, according to ligures issued by the Act ing Commonwealih Statistieian, Mr. J. Barry. In 1913-14 tax collectious amounted to £23,ii(iit,(lil(), or £4 14s 4d per head, aud iu 1916-47 to £578,11(10, 000, pr £51 Os 5d per head. It was not until the 1930's that taxalion passeil the ^100,000,000 mark. and iu 1959 it vvas still at the comparativelv low level of £124,618,000. Between then and now n has more tliay trebled ilself. Of £51 0s 5d per head paid in the last taxation year £29 ls was paid iu inconie tax, £6 ,12s 5d in excise, £1 10s sd in saies tax, £3 17s lld in Customs, £1 11s in pavrolls tax, £1 9s 6d in ]>robate, and £1 0s 6d in entertainmeut. All other amounts were under the pound.
