Received Tuesdav, 8.45 p.m. SYDNEY, leb. 11. The French motorship Alonkay arrived at Syduey today with 21 Jewish refugees from Central Europe who said that accomniodation for tliem in flats or houses had been arranged by rela tives. Few of the refugees who have been travelling 84 days under conditions described as vile, can sjieak eveu 1 nroken, English. They paid £125 each for their passages. The group a-te in a rness below oue of the after hatches and the declt today was littered with rubbish. When the ship berthed u powerful stench came from the illventilated 'tweendecks quarters. Somc of the heavy luggage in the ship S nold had suburban addresses in Sydney and Alelbourne painted on it. The press alleges that attempts were made to stifle publicitv about the arrival of the refugees. The State president of the Returned Soldiers' League, Air. K. Bolton, is" demanding an immedia.te Alinisterial inquiiy into the bona fides of tlie -^felatives and friends of the 3000 displaeed people from Europe who will reach Australia before the end of April. He wants to knovv if the reiatives have leased or purehased homes for the refugees and. if so, how long* the flats or houses have remained empty. ' ' Plans are being prepared for a rcsidential Lotel at 'Darling Point to cater exclusively for New Zealanders and Ainericans. There will be a bathroom attached to every room.
