LETTER FROM ENGLAND
PARCELS WOULD BE WELCOME An invalid nurse from the first war, and one noted for her fortitude and patience, writes as follov/s of conditions as she ,finds them in Sussex: "We have just begun to get over the transporl slrike, which has made things very difficult. Everyohing was short and we were wondering what we were going ,to do, when, praise be, it ended, and so for a few days in between this and our present icy spell we have been practically ncrmal again, that is normal to our ration ideas and not your ideas of plenty in New Zealand. "We are now maro'oned— nothir.g on the roads. and ths snow coming tdown as thick as ever, and we just j'wonder when it will end. The trees jare weighted down with the n snow; leverything is frozen and we just |begin to wonder if any foodstuffs ! will get rcund to us this week. An jadjacent farm sent us some milk, |bufc since then there has been nothjing but icy stillness. The stillness of the atmosphere is almost frightiening, as all the usual sounds have jstopped. Even the birds have been quiet. Today the seagulls have ibeen coming every hour for food, I and called, and called till they got jsome.hing from our very meagre stock. Although we are miles i i,nland they visit us regularly, comiing right on to the v^randah for ifood. Luckily we have some flour !on hand and will not starve this j week, but how glad we will be when jstorekeepers can call again. The c'old is bad enough for the young land healthy, but for other poor 'mortals things are gloomy." Anyone desiring the address of j the writer. and who would like to | send a parcel, may obtain it 'from !"The Chronicle" Office, Otaki.
