Received Monday, 10.20 a.m. BERLIN, FeB. 9'. More than fifty persons are feared to be dead in a big fire which destroyed the dance hall at an amusement centre in Spandau, 'a suburb in the Bricish sector of Berlin. The bodies are still being recov-ered. A fancy dress ball, which' British troops attended, was in progress when the fire, which troops helped to extinguish, broke out. It is officiaily stated that three British soldiers were killed and four seriously injured. , An 18-year-old soldier rescued a number of people and then perish.ed trying to save more. The fire started by a spark in the roof and the place was burned down in fifteen minutes. Between 300 and 400 people attended. There was only one exit and the doorway was j&mmed with struggling and screaming women. Most of the people perished in the cloakrooms, seeking their beLongings. Several .women were literally crushed to death. Those who rushed straight to the streets, abandoning their coats, trudged homeward through snow in incongruous fancy dress. At least forty bodies have been recovered from the debris and the search will be resumed tomorrow.
