PERSONAL

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

SHANNON FIRE BRIGADE Sir, — May we, through the valuable space of your columns, call the attention of the public of Shan non and district to a public meeting which is to be held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening at 8 p.m. to discuss methods of raising £600 to enable the Shannon Volunteer Fire Brigade to be equipped with a new fire engine. At the moment the local brigade has a full complement of efficient firemen, and their equipment, with the exception of the fire engine, is of a very high- standard. The engine which the brigade now has is an obsolete Modil "T" Ford, which cannot carry sufficient equipment, let alone the number oi' firemen required to man that equipment at the scene of a fire. The present acute housing position in this town demands that we maintain an efficient fire service. The loss of a house by fire at the present time would be a major disdouer to Shannon, as its replacement could not be made for some considerable time. We would .not only lose the house, but in many cases the occupiers, because they could not find other accommodation in the town. The public will, therefore, realise that it is our' duty to preserve every house we now have in Shan non. Our fire brigade is the only body that can help us safeguard our property against fire. It is the duty of every person and organisafcion to see that our fire brigade is ;o equipped to give us that protection. We appeal to each and every member of the public to attend this , meeting, as their support is urgently needed to assist the fire brigade in their worthy effort. vhhtq pfp R.E. DOWNES, MAYOR. C. G. WISHART, Superintendent, Shannon V.F.B. Shannon, 'Feb. 7.
