Amplifying details of tlie new explorations in Antarctica, Re'ar Admiral Byrd disclosed that the discovery of the Adelie Land plateau 9600 feet high, Avas of major importance. He believed it was the edge of the world 's greatest inland plateau, and the polar icecap there was estimated to be li miles thick. Discussing the expodition's militarv aspects Admiral Byrd said a trenlendous amount vvas being learned about air, sea and land operations under the world 's worst conditions. He hoped sueh experiments would continue because the Antarctie was more rugged than the Arctic and averaging fifty deorees colder.
