COUNCIL HOLDS FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The usual fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was field on Tuesday evening. Present were the Mayor (Mr. R. E. Downes) and Crs. R. R. Lind, J. A. Roach, J. Curran, E. Perry and C. G. Wisnart. Apologies were received from Crs. H. Aitchison and H. Norris. It was reported that Mr. B. Dalley had tendered his resignation from the council's staff and the works committee had received one application for the position. Followin^ an interview with the applicant, "the works committee had accepted his application. On the motion of Cr. Curran the appointment was confirmed. . Lind reoorted that he had made an inspection of the sanitary depot and several urgent matters required attention, such as improved water supply, shed repairs, lorry tools and spare tyre and a supply of cans. With regard to the shed repairs, it was left in the hands of Cr. Curran to interview Mr. R. Hayes to assist with the work. A communication was received from the Palmerston North City Council, asking if the Council had any objection under section 217 of the Municipal Corporations Act to the Palmerston North City Council motor omnibus service plying for hire to race meetings within a radius of 45 miles of Palmerston North, and to let a bus on a contract basis to parties for special trips within the No. 2 Licensing District. The letter pointed out that in both cases the trips would commence and finish at Palmerston North, but they would involve travelling through the areas of other local authorities to which section 217 of the Act might apply. The Shannon Council's opinion was asked for. The proposed licenses would not permit competition with existing regular services over their regular routes, but would apply to special trips only. On the motion of Cr. Wishart, the town clerk was directed to reply that no objection would be raised by the council to the proposed application. Cr. Lind, chairman o * the works committee, reported that the magnetic truck was over the borough streets last week and a considerable amount of nails, wire, bolts, etc , had been collected. In connection with the proposed purchase of a section in Plimmer Terrace by the council, further correspondence on the matter was received. It was arranged that the Mayor and the town clork . int?r- , view Mr. R. Hook and Cr. Wishart was asked to cail on the Loans Board while on a visit to Wellington next week. General matters were discussed during which Cr. V'ishart undertook to see if the borough lawn mower could be made serviceabie. Jilt was resolved to hand a number 'of old library books over to the iocai fire brigade. A letter from a resident in ' Sheehan Street, pointing out that tiie water supply in that street was very unsatisfactory, was received and it was decided that improvements should be carried out in this area. Cr. Roach reported that he had inspected repairs which had been carried out to the dweliing in Srout Street, and stated that the work ppe-ared to be quite satisfactory. In connection with the registration of dogs, it was proposed by Cr. Roach and carried by the council, that the fees for the registration of dogs for the borough for the year commencing January 1, 1947, be fixed at 2s 6d for each dog kept solely for the purpose of herding sheep or cattle and 10s for all other dogs. No person is enitled to have registered more than three dogs at the reduced rate of 2s 6d. In addition to the fees, a charge of one shilling will be made in respect of the approved remedy for hydatids. Mr. G. Moss, Junr., was appointed dog tax collector at the regular fee. Accounts amounting to £127 5s lOd were passed for payment. -
