AUCKLAND, Feb. 4. More than 100 fruit and vegetable retailers rnet this moniing to decide whether they would pay the container charge on stone fruit. No deeision was reached at the meetjng last night called by the Auckland Fruit and Vegetable Retailers' Assoeiation as fewer than one quarter pf the members were present. This morning the majority of retailers agreed to pay the container charge under protest until the res'ult. oi' tho meetmg of their federation which takes place iir Wellington on Fehruary 9, is known. If the container charge is still enforced", as i3 probable, retaib ers intend to increase their margin of profit to 40 per cent on the wholesgle cost of fruit, plns the container chaTge and delivery into store, This will invotve a higher pri.ee to the consumer. Buying was-. proe.eeding normally this morning. 'ihe retailers made no efforts to inclu.de priyate buyers to sup port their case. It was suggested last night that retailers should picket the market this morning to warn buyeis not to pay the .container charge but no action on these lines was taken.
