Some Surprise Defeats In Singles Championship WELLINGTON, Feb. 4. The early eliminaiion of C. Spearman (Christchurch B.S.A.) twice previously winner of the titie, was the major surprise in the singles ehampionships at the . Dominion bowling tournament which opened in ideal weather today. Spearman went out in the third rouna. - Another f ea ture was that F. Livingstone (Onehunga), also a previous winner and Australian • singles champion m 1938 and runner-up for the British Empire singles in 1938, was foreed to play extra ends against J. E. Cooper (Barringtou) and F. Hazelwood (Lyall Bay) before he wafe suecessful. Leading players In Section A who still have two lives in'clude B. Haworth (Canterbury), A. Murdoch '(Otahuhu), who was third at Auckland .in 1-945. J. M. Squire (Hawera) 1941 champion, W. P. O 'Neill (Runanga), S. Vella (OnehangaJ who wa^ in the last ffv-e at Christchurch last year, L. Y. Macey (ReWera), and J. M. Giles (United) who was the only player to secure .a win in section play against J. S. Martin at Christchurch last year. Livingstone was 10 points behind on the 10th end against Cooper but took charge to draw level on the 21st end and notched two exeellent shots on the extra liead. In his match against Harewood, Livingstone trai'led liis opponent till the 21st end when a two enabled hini to level the scores at 10 all. On the extra end he laid the winning shot.
