IWO JIMA'S GLOWING RECORD
SUCCESS IN MATAMATA CUP Iwo Jima added another success to his already glowing record when . he won the Matamata Cup in a close finish with Tilting. Ridden an excellent race by Jockey Williamson, Iwo Jima stayed just a little better than his rival. The four-year-old - ChatsworthBasra gelding won at his first start at the Ohinemuri meeting held at Paeroa last May. -At his next start he. romped home in the second division of the Otaua Handicap at the Franklin June meeting. Suceess came again in the Stewards Handicap at the Bay of Plenty July meeting. He had by then proved himself as one of the best northern three-year-olds. At the first day of the Avondale November meeting, Iwo Jima won the Electric Hack Handicap at his first start of the season. He made it five on end when, ridden by Williamson, he scored in the Waitemata Hack Handicap on the second day of the A.R.C. Christmas meeting. When trainer Hector Gray started him in his - first race in open company, the A.R.C. Rangitoto Handicap of one mile, it proved that the trainer's confldence in the horse was fully justified.' Iwo Jima was narrowly beaten by White Blaze, a well-known northern sprinter. Iwo Jima redeemed himself in the one and a-quarter mile Matamata Cup, and so far this season he has won approximately £1450 in stake money. Favouritism Justified The six-year-old Robemond geldmg, Craven, justified his favouritism when he scored in the Tayforth Handicap at the Wanganui meeting last Saturday. In his last six starts he has secured three wins and one third. Craven is now in top form and it will take more than weight to stop him. Another Win for Hadrian Mr. C. Mora, Levin, scored another win with his Theio geldmg, ' Hadrian, on Saturday. Aiohough he has not shown form in recent starts, Hadrian's win suggests that he may not be long beiore repeating this performance. Indian Dawn's Handicap Indian Dawn won her first start in open company when she made it hve on end after winnmg the C.J.C. Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton indian Dawn is a three-year-old oay nlly by Nizami from Dawning Light, ana is tramed for Mrs. N. Bariow by C. McCarthy, of Riccarton. Lance Wing Near Form After being given up as a failure last season, nance Wing suggested that he is not very far from reachmg top form when he finished third benind Bonny Dink and Vaitoon m the Walton Handicap of seven and a-quarter furlongs at the Matamata meeting last Saturaay. He has started four times this season with only one third to his credit. However,-the Irish Lancer gelding should be in the news sodn. ; . • ■ • , >( . A1 Sirat Disappoints A1 Sirat disappointed when he flmshed a bad last in the Miaouinmer Handicap. He was promment early, but drifted to the rear and made no improvement. Consisteney Rewarded Consistency was well rewarded when Master Raymond scored in the Pongaroa Highweight at the Pahiatua meeting last Saturday. Although he has failed to win since he scored at the Rangitikei meeting last November, Master Raymond has run good races and filied several minor placings. He is trained by P. Williams, of Otaki, for Mr. E. Miles.
