NATIONAL ORCHESTRA TO MAKE ITS DEBUT
WELLINGTON, Feb. 3. The Minister in charge of broadcasting, Hon. F. Jones, stated today that, following some months of intensive rehearsal under Mr. Andprsen T-yrer, the National Orcliestra of the New 'Z-aland Broadcasting Servi e, .will mako its first. public appearance in the Wellingtown Hall on March 6. The orchestra I has been busy preparing a « repertoire covering the needs of a full concert season. The sections will shor ly recombino in Wellington for further preparation for the season 's coucerts. Mr. Jones added that after the inaugural concert oik March 6, a second orchestral concert conducted by Mr. Tyrer will be given in the Wellington Town Hall on March 12. -On March 29 the orchestra will again play in the Town Hall, on this occasion under the baton of Dr. Edgar Bainton as guest conductor.- The programme will include piano concertos w/tli Lili Ivraus as soloist. Following the Wellington concerts the . orchestra will visit oUier main centres for a season of public appearances in each city. It is hoped arrangements can be made for oue of the concerts in Christchurch to be conducted by Dr. Bainton. It is proposed that in the course of the orchestral season in each of the centres, special concerts sliould be given for secondary school pupils. Ar rangements for these concerts were now in'hand. UjlA'n6th6V gubst-' oildu'ctor for the 1947 season will be the New Zealand-born niusician, Mr. Warwick Braithwaite,, who will be iu the - Dominion during-' June, July and August. It is prop.osed' to arrange symphony concerts to be" conducted by Mr.- Braithwaite in each of the main centres. The Minister said he felt sure musicallv minded people throughout the Doniiriion would recognise the inaugural concert of thq National Orchestra as an event of considerabie importaiice in our country's inusical history.
