HUGE SUM INVESTED BY AUCKLANDERS
In ten days of racing and trotting in Auckland, from Boxing Day to Saturday, punters invested £1,770,812 (states the Star). Conipare this with ten years ago and the result is reniarkable, for in that corresponding period only £408,230 went througli the totalisators. The present-day figure is over 400 per cent. greater than that for 1936-37, or, in other words, for each pound invested today only live shillings was invested ten years ago. During the four days of the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting which opened on Boxing Day £905,254 was handled by t.lie totalisator as "against £266,134 in 1936-37, while for the midsummer meeting (January 25 and 29) £315,934 w-ent through the macliiiie. This iigure compares with £52,943 ten years ago.
