RAM FAIR AT LEVIN

Southdowns Meet With Keen Competition ROMNEYS OVER SUPPUED The Horowhenua A. and P. Association's annual ram fair was conducted at Levin yesterday by Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd'., in- conjunction with association officials.. There was a large attendance of buyers from all parts of the area between Palmerston North and Johnsonville, with district farmers strongly represented. Over 400 rams were offered, comprising 189 Romneys and 215 Southdowns. The entry came forward in excellent condition, " the standard throughout being ' exceptionally high and showing v an improvement on previous years. Under the new rules all rams eoming into the fair are inspected and any not conformiQg. to the quality required are branded and sent to the works. It says a great deal for the offering that less than half ti dozen met this fate. The Southdowns were a particularly fine lot and they met very keen competition, which firmed as the sale progress^d. Prices in many cases were in advance of vendors' expectations, while the averege of between nine and te.~ engines was an increase of from two to thcee guineas on last year's fair. Top price of the section and fair was 20- guineas for a stud ram from the flock of Mr. Ray Field (Sanson), and it was purchased by Mr. C. R. Cottle (Manakau) . Quite a number brought between 14 and 16 guineas. \ The Romney section was over supplied, but nevertheless the first run was keenly sought at ah excellent average price of between eight and nine guineas. In the second run, however, prices slumped to about four guineas, the - majority failing to reach the reserves ,and being passed in. The. highest Romney price was 164 gujneas for three rams sold to Mr. L. Stebbings (Johnsonville) on account of Mr. H. j. Kilsby (Levin).
