HOROWHENUA PIPE BAND GAINS FOURTH
CREDITABLE PERFORMAN CE IN PROVINCIAL CONTEST Led by Drum Major J. R. Macfarlane, the Horowhenua Pipe Band secured fourth place in the provincial pipe band contest, held at Napier during the weekend. Only six bands were present, this being probably due to the fact that che large majority of bands have not yet recovered their pre-war strength or standard. Three A grade bands, Wanganui, Ruahirib d,nd Manawatu, were competing so that to gain a fourth place was a creditable achievement, particularly as this was the first contest xhe Horowhenua band has attended and few of its personnel have faced judges. The result of the contest was as follows: Wanganui. (362-J points; 1, Ruahine (353) 2, Port Ahuriri (351-4- ) 3, Horowhenua (345|) 4, Manawatu (337 £) 5, Hastings (3151 6. Prior to the commencement of the contest, the Horowhenua band led the contestants from Marine Parade to McLean Park, where a large crowd had assembled. The Dominion president of the Pipe Bands' Association, Mr. I. D. Cameron, and the vice-president of the Wellington-Hawke's Bay Centre, Mr-. J. Lothian, were visitors to the contest. The following are the detailed lesults: — Quick step : Wanganui 266£ points (drill 173i, music 93^), Ruahine 261 (170-91) 2, Port Ahuriri 260 (16793) 3, Horowhenua 257i (166|-90£) 4, Manawatu 244| (150^-94) 5, Hastings 235 (153-82) 6. Selection,: .HWgnganui, 96. , points, 1; Manawatu 93, 2; Ruahine 92, 3; Port Ahuriri 91, 4; Horowhenua 88, 5; Hastings 80, 6. Drum major's display: Hastings 94 points, 1; Manawatu 914, 2; Wanganui 90, 3; Ruahine 892, 4; Port Ahuriri 84f, 5. The Horowhenua band did not compete.
