RODE NINE WINNERS AT TRENTHAM
' During the four days ' raciiig at the Wellington summer meeting J. Broughton was. in, brilliant ..fpxni; i apd he saluted'L.tlid jti^g^i, ak-'thie' 'fidei: dfr the winher'" on fiine "occa'sions" (states the Evcning Post.) In several instances it was ouly his vigorous horsemansliip that brought success to his mounts, and when he scored on Clyde Bridge in the Kelburn Hack Handicap 011 Saturday a patron was heard to remarlq "He could wiu on auything. " However, the triumph in this instance was not altogether expected and Clyde Bridge paid a dividend, that is seldoni forthcoming from a horse ridden by Broughton. O11 the opening day of the meeting the champion was associated with two vviners, Howe and Yasda, but' it was not till the fourth race on the second day that he rode a winiier, Lady Christiue, in the Fitzlierbert Handicap, but he wound up the day by riding three of the next four winners, Bruce, Da Vinci, and Howe. However, backers/ found him expensive on Anniversary Day when he failed to ride a vviuner, al though his mounts paid place dividends in two instances. Again on the concluding day matters appeared to be running against him when the lifth event caine and went without his saluting the judge, but he then registered a "hat-triek" by riding the last three winners, Da Vinci, Cldye Bridge, and Opulent. Those nine championship points raised the" Awapuni horseman's aggregate for the season to 45, and he is now well clear of N. B. Holland, who has 24 wins to his credit. Then f'ollow R. B. Ireland with 19, W. Connor 17, and G. F. Hughes, H. N. Wiggins, and C. A. Bowry with 16 each. W. Connor, who has been coming , into prominence of late, rode four | winners at the Wellington meeting, two of them coming in classic events | tlirougli Beau le Havre. Four jockeys rode two winners each, they being L. J. Ellis, A. Midwood, C. A. Bowrv, 1 and H. N., Wiggins. The last-named did not wait for the final day at . Trentham, but returned to Auckland for Saturday 's racing fhere, where he ■ registered one success in the saddle, as did N. B. Holland and T. W. Green, who were also active at Trentham on the earlier days.
