MUCH WORK AHEAD

Corso's Plans To Assist China's Needs With the winding up of UNRRA the work of CORSO would be of very first importance, particularly* in. Far Eastern countries, said the president of the" Levin CORSO committee, Mrs. H. B. BUfdekin, at a meeting held in Levin on Tuesday. CORSO's major work wouid nqw be on -behalf of China, and in order to bring relief to this country a reftewed effort would have to be made by'local corhmittees. The reason why more meetings had not been called last year was because it had not been indicarei what CORSO's future would be in view of the withdrawal of UNRRA, said Mrs. Burdekin. No effort would be spared to render all possible assistance to the •var stricken areas in China. The first step to be taken by the Levin committee would be a clothcs drive, followed by a shop and street day. It was announced that the previous Shop and street day had nefcted £122 17s 6d, and further donations had brought this total tod£152 7s F-d. The money had been sent to CORSO headquarters in Wellington. A further source of finance result-ed from the coilection of fats and their subsequent sale to soap manufacturers. o Members were asked to continue their efforts in the coilection of fat. The coilection of fleeces was stni in progress, and it was hoped that farmers who had not yet done so would assist by handing in a fleece or fleeces to Messrs. Abfabatn an l Williams, Ltd., as soon as possible. Wool was urgently required for the making of garments for those unfortunate people who were suffering through the aftermath of the war.

When "discussing the 'proposed street and shop day, the town clerk, ( Mr. H. L. Jenkins, who represented , the Mayor, .Mr. H. B. Burdekin, ( said that oliiy one shop and street : day a month was permitted, and . the closest month available would ■ be May. • ' It was decided that a Written . applieation be made to the Levin ' Borough Council for permission to hold a street day in that month. It was further decided' that- the ' clothes drive be held on Saturday, February 15, and that the boy scouts and girl guides be approach- ' ed to assist in this work. A letter was received frorn CORSO headquarters in Wellington acknowledging with thanks the gift of a spinning wheel and fleece sent by Mrs. J. Harvey. It was decided that in view of the decision to itensify the wdrk of the committee, meetings would ih future be held in the Mayor 'S room on the last Friday of each month. The following officefs wero elected for the year: — President: Mfs. H. B. Burdekin; vice-president: Mrs. C. S. Keedwell; secretary: Mrs. E. de Mey; committee: Mesdames L. A. Kings, C. Andricksen, A.
