Holmes and the remiiaiits of crops aie r> appearing but road and rail tnivelling nave been coinpletelv disorganised. A railway bridge is down nortli of Tweed ileads* and water is still ruuning several feet higli over the main roads to Brisbane. Threats of further seriuus iiooding have now passed. In the Xerang dist riet, about 200 people are cut olf by the llooded river. Jlome-made rafts of timber and petrol eans saved 2'S people at Muu gandan. )Six hundred passengers were marooned at Casino, whe.n both divisions of the Brisbane express were forced to hait there for 22 hours. Police, army, and civilian rescue parties pressed into use every fonn oi rescue gear, including draught. Iiorses, oil drums, boats of all sizes, aini amphibious military vehicles. I n one district alone 130 liouses are still under water, and stock losses have been heavv. Although some farniers around Casino and the adjacent areas Inive been saved financially by the rain, large sections of western Queenslaml and north-western Xew >South Wales are still in the grip of a disastrous drought.
