YOTJNG WOMAN SWIMS TO SAFETY

AUUKLAXB, Jan. 23. A man was drowned and a voung woman had a narrow escape froni drovvning after tliev i'ell fi (J feet into the Wairoa Kiver t'rom the i'ukehui railway bridge. The man was Harohl Osborne, aged 32, single, of Avoca, Xorth Auckland. Mr. Osborne and IMiss IMargaret Greenwood, of Palmerston Xorth, had been to a ilunce and were erossing the bridge which is on the DargavilletVaiotira braneh line and is about SUd feet loug. Tliey were about lialf way across when they were passed by a jig'ger carrying nien. It is not known whether Ihe jigger struck the couple or whether in an endeavour to get clear of the traek they niissed their footing and fell. Miss Greenwood struck out for the nearest bank about 30 vards away and on reaching it caught hohl of sonie willows and dragged lierself ashore. The body of klr. Osborne has not been recovered.
